Qantas has responded to Air New Zealand’s additional peak season flights to Houston by increasing its own frequency to Dallas.

Commencing today, the airline is operating an extra flight to the southern city per week, bringing the service up to daily, Dallas Morning News reported.

The move comes despite Air New Zealand introducing competition on the route, with its new Auckland-Houston services, which according to the Kiwi carrier’s Chief Sales and Commercial Officer, Cam Wallace, have received strong passenger enthusiasm.

Qantas’ capacity on the Sydney-Dallas route has increased incrementally since it first launched four weekly Boeing 747-400 flights in May 2011. An additional two services were added in January 2012.

The biggest boost to Qantas’ services to Texas came in September 2014 when the airline replaced the 747 with the jumbo A380.

The new extra daily service means an increase of 16 percent in the number of seats available to flyers on the route.
