Qantas launches new route from Brisbane to the South Pacific

Qantas is making it easier for Brisbane's business travellers to fly to Papua New Guinea, with a new daily service between Queensland's capital and Port Moresby.

Qantas is making it easier for Brisbane’s business travellers to fly to Papua New Guinea, with a new daily service between Queensland’s capital and Port Moresby.

The new service, which launched over the weekend, replaces Qantas previous Cairns and Port Moresby flights and is operated by the 174-seater Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

Accommodating business travellers, the plane features 12 business seats and flights are timed to arrive in PNG at midday, giving professionals ample time to attend meetings in the afternoon and early next day before returning the following afternoon.

According to Qantas International’s CEO, Gareth Evans, the new route is designed to meet strong demand from the corporate market, in particular the resources sector.

“We’re really pleased to be giving our customers more seats and better connections on this important route.”

“Brisbane’s a growing hub that joins our domestic, trans-Tasman and international networks, and the clear message from our customers was that it was the ideal base for our Port Moresby operation.

“We’re proud to be continuing the role we’ve always played in supporting business, investment and trade between Australia and Papua New Guinea.”

Qantas and Air Niugini have agreed to codeshare on routes between Australia and Port Moresby. The codeshare is still subject to government and regulatory approval.

The new service comes less than a fortnight after the Flying Kangaroo unveiled its new Business International Lounge, featuring locally produced food, low-slung lounges and new facilities. Click here for more information.
