The flying kangaroo has announced plans to open a new Qantas Club Lounge at one of the country’s busiest hubs, Hobart Airport, giving Tasmanian travellers wanting that extra bit of comfort something to look forward to.
Part of a long-term deal with Qantas and Jetstar, the new lounge is predicted to open in 2027 and offer almost twice the capacity of the current lounge, which is struggling to meet customer demand.
Tasmanian produce will feature highly in the lounge’s food and beverage offering, Qantas said.
Meanwhile, Qantas Group’s recently launched Airbus A220 touched down in Tasmania for the first time this morning (1 July) from Melbourne, with the new jet promising a higher level of comfort for flyers and a friendlier footprint on the planet.
QantasLink will use the A220 for up to 26 flights per week between Melbourne and Hobart.

From 12 November 2024, QantasLink will also fly the next-generation aircraft between the Victorian capital and Launceston.
The A220 will replace Qantas’ Boeing 717s as part of the group’s fleet renewal. Among the fuel-efficient aircraft’s features are a modern cabin, large windows, overhead lockers, free Wi-Fi and specially designed seats.
The Airbus jet, named Minyma Kutjara Tjukurpa, features artwork by Pitjantjatjara artist Maringka Baker, depicting a Dreaming story.
At Hobart Airport, Qantas Group Executive Andrew Parker said that the new aircraft and lounge would greatly enhance the travel experience for both locals and tourists.

“Feedback from customers about the A220 has been fantastic and we’re really excited to be bringing it to Tasmania for the first time,” Parker stated.
“Tasmania is the home of eco-tourism and there’s no better place to operate our A220 aircraft which generate 25 per cent fewer emissions per seat and 50 per cent less noise than the aircraft that they replace.
“Their size and economics make them a great fit for many of our Tasmanian routes and this is just the start. We’ll continue to add A220 services as we receive additional new aircraft in the coming months and years.

“We’re also working closely with Hobart Airport on the plans for a new Qantas Club lounge to upgrade the pre-flight travel experience for customers. Once complete, our customers will be able to enjoy almost double the space and a wider range of local produce.”
Earlier this year, QantasLink showcased its first Airbus aircraft with an exclusive preview flight to Uluṟu. Karryon was among the first to fly onboard ‘Minyma Kutjara Tjukurpa’. Read our review.
In 2022, Hobart Airport highlighted plans to increase its terminal size two-fold as part of its 20-year vision to accommodate increasing passenger numbers, with current facilities operating at almost twice their intended capacity.
