Search continues for EgyptAir MS804's black box

Egyptian authorities have deployed a submarine to search for the missing black box on EgyptAir's downed A320 aircraft.

Egyptian authorities have deployed a submarine to search for the missing black box on EgyptAir’s downed A320 aircraft.

The extensive underwater search comes four days after Flight MS804 fell off the radar en route from Paris to Cairo, taking with it 66 people including 56 passengers and 10 crew.

Over the weekend, search parties confirmed the aircraft had crashed into the Mediterranean Sea when it located plane debris including seats, luggage and bodies around 290km north of Alexandria.

Despite their best efforts, teams have been unable to locate the inflight recorders, which authorities believe will help determine what happened on board the aircraft in its final moments.

Early analysis of information retrieved from the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) showed that smoke was detected in the lavatory, which travelled through the plane’s electronics before reaching the cockpit. The plane’s signal was lost around four minutes after the initial smoke alert.

Egypt’s Civil Aviation Minister said the airline along with an Airbus specialist are attempting to determine the cause of the smoke. He added that the aircraft was in perfect flying condition and does not believe it was caused by technical failure.

Egyptian authorities have been relatively open with information regarding Flight Ms804 and even published first photos of the crash on Egypt Army’s Facebook page.
