'Swisstainable': SWISS and Switzerland Tourism team up to promote SAF air travel

Switzerland Tourism will be the first Swiss-based tourism organisation to make a significant contribution to promoting carbon-neutral air travel with a commitment to offset carbon emissions from its employee duty and business travel from 2023.

Switzerland Tourism will be the first Swiss-based tourism organisation to make a significant contribution to promoting carbon-neutral air travel with a commitment to offset carbon emissions from its employee duty and business travel from 2023.

The Swiss national tourism board will expand on its long-term sustainability collab with Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) by purchasing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and investing in high-quality climate protection projects.

From 2023 onwards, Switzerland Tourism will halve the carbon dioxide emissions generated by its business and duty air travel by using SAF and compensate for the remaining emissions through the myclimate foundation.

“Sustainability begins at home,” Switzerland Tourism CEO Martin Nydegger said.

“Seeing the tourism sector respond so favourably to our ‘Swisstainable‘ initiative and sign up in their thousands, it’s clear we must make our own contribution, together with our partner SWISS, by ensuring that our people’s air travel is performed with SAF and its carbon impact is further offset through appropriate investments.”

SWISS CEO Dieter Vranckx said: “Switzerland Tourism and SWISS both carry the Swiss cross out into the world and I’m delighted that we’re now teaming up on the sustainability front, too.”

“In adopting this forward-looking approach, Switzerland Tourism is taking on a pioneering role. And we will keep striving to convince other organisations of the benefits of sustainable air travel.”

Through participation in research, pilot projects and SAF alliances, SWISS and the Lufthansa Group are committed to the development and scaling of SAF.

SWISS private and business customers can reduce the carbon emissions of their air travel by paying a SAF surcharge at the time of booking.

The airline also recently became the first passenger airline to use carbon-efficient AeroSHARK tech, which reduces aerodynamic drag and lowers fuel consumption and carbon emissions.
