5 things you didn't know about flying

If you've ever wondered how flight attendants handle (punish) annoying passengers or what they get up to during lay overs - you finally have the answers!

If you’ve ever wondered how flight attendants handle (punish) annoying passengers or what they get up to during lay overs – you finally have the answers!

News.com.au talked to a former flight attendant, Shawn Kathleen also the creator of the website Passenger Shaming to find out what goes on behind the scenes.

The findings are actually quite interesting (and hilarious).

1. What happens when it’s just the crew?

Last month, Brooklyn man Chris O’Leary made made headlines after he tweeted a pic of himself in an empty plane. The picture received over 511 retweets and a whole lot of responses from passengers jealous of his solo situation.

But according to an anonymous flight attendant ‘Betty’ who also writes the Yahoo Travel column ‘Confessions of a Fed-Up Flight Attendant’, empty flights happen often.

She said every once in a while airlines will ferry a flight to deliver the plane and crew to a destination.

Without passengers onboard, it’s the crew’s turn to play – and play they do.

Betty says a popular pastime among flight attendants is ‘aisle surfing’ – this is where you put a meal tray on the floor, stand on it and hold on as the plane prepares to take off. The moment the plane lifts off the runway you let go and slide to the back of the plane. Unsurprisingly, Betty said the game always ends badly.

2. What do they say about you?

We all do it, so don’t be too surprised to learn that flight attendants love a good gasbag session.

Shawn the ex-flight attendant says crew have codes for various types of passengers.

For example a few years back a ‘hot coffee’ meant there was a cute passenger onboard.

““You would say, ‘I’ve got hot coffee in 3B!’ Which meant there was an extremely attractive passenger in that particular seat who the other flight attendants should check out.”

3. They know when you’re ‘doing it’

If you and your partner thought your bathroom romp successfully went under the radar, then you’d be wrong.

Shawn says flight attendants know when passengers join the ‘Mile-High Club’ and she doesn’t understand why anyone finds it appealing.

“You know what those lavatories are like. They’re disgusting!”

4. They’re more than just hostesses

Cabin crew aren’t just trained in martial arts (click here to read about the rigorous training they’re required to undergo) they’re also beauty experts.

Flight attendants say flying can be tough on the skin but they have a way to deal with it. A former pilot Tom Bunn says ‘nothing keeps that moisture in better than baby oil’.

5. How are annoying passengers ‘punished’?

drink on plane

We’ve all wondered about this one. Do they spit in the drink? Or put something in it? Shawn says although she hasn’t spat in anyone’s drink, flight attendants do have a way to get their liquid revenge.

She says a common payback to nasty passengers is to fill the cup with a lot of ice and pour only two tablespoons of actual drink.

Apparently the drink is called the ‘A***hole Special’.
