The nation’s capital saw its very first Qatar Airways flight from Doha touch down at Canberra Airport this morning.

The arrival of the Boeing 777-300, welcomed by water cannons, marks the beginning of a new daily route from Canberra to Doha via Sydney.

The 358-seater aircraft fits 42 people in business class and 316 passengers in economy.

According to The Canberra Times, the plane that arrived this morning featured the airline’s swanky new business class offering known as Qsuite.

Qsuite has been described by the airline as a ‘sanctuary in the sky’. We can certainly understand why! It boasts a double bed set up as well as private, retractable meeting pods for up to four people .

It will eventually become a permanent part of the Canberra route.

The Managing Director of Canberra Airport Stephen Byron said the Qatar connection was an exciting development in the fulfilment of a major goal.

“We have had a long-held dream that we could connect Canberra with the rest of the world. The beginning of the Qatar Airways service provides seamless access to the major international hub of Doha, and a stepping off point for the Middle East, Europe and points beyond”.

In a quirky twist, another Qatar Airways’-branded flying object will be seen in the skies over the nation’s capital with Balloon Aloft Canberra launching a new hot air balloon sponsored by the airline.
