TripAdvisor is about to change the airline industry

TripAdvisor is about to impact the airline industry in a huge way by opening up its popular reviewing platform for airline reviews, potentially changing the way consumers research their flights.

Consumers will now be able to rate their experiences flying with airlines, helping others make better decisions when choosing who to fly, thanks to a new airline review platform on popular travel website TripAdvisor.

The new enhancements to the site, which have been welcomed by airlines such as Virgin Australia, will bring greater transparency to the marketplace.

“The time has come for a better way to research, compare and shop for flights. TripAdvisor is excited to innovate and lead with the launch of airline reviews in 48 markets in 29 languages.”

Andrew Wong, Head of Airline Review Partnerships, TripAdvisorGlobal Flights Business.

With the launch of the new airline reviews platform, which will include all major airlines globally, TripAdvisor expands its massive base of 350 million traveller reviews and opinions. TripAdvisor currently already receives more than 340 million monthly unique visitors.

According to the online review website, 88 percent of Australians welcome airline reviews, and 82 percent of Aussies said that they would consult airline reviews before booking a flight to make better decisions on who they choose to fly with. Also, 63 percent said they’d want to share feedback to help improve the experience for others.

“Over the years, the in-flight experience has changed dramatically – in some ways for the better, in some ways for the worse… We’re uniquely solving that problem by surfacing candid traveller reviews and photos, detailed amenities information and tools to find the lowest fares all on one site, empowering flyers to pick the best itinerary for their trip.”

These statistics paint a pretty competitive future for airlines as they will now seek to avoid copping bad reviews on what is undoubtedly the biggest travel review platform online. Luckily, Aussie airlines are already highly rated when compared to the global average, according to Wong. For example, Virgin Australia holds a rating of 4/5, versus a global average of 3.7/5.

In addition to adding the new airline review section, TripAdvisor has also launched a newly redesigned flights search service, and a beta launch of its “flyscore” that rates the quality of each air travel itinerary for consumers.
