United Relax Row will let you lie flat in Economy with 250+ new planes on order by 2028

United Airlines will feature new Elevated interiors and introduce the United Relax Row in Economy on more than 250 aircraft on order in the next two years, creating a future-focused passenger experience on its international and domestic fleet.

The new United Relax Row of three dedicated lie-flat seats in Economy will launch in 2027, available on more than 200 Boeing 787 and 777 widebody aircraft by 2030.

A first for North American airlines, United Relax Row offers a dedicated row of three seats that transform into a mattress-like space after take-off, similar to Air New Zealand’s Economy Skycouch, with up to 12 sections available per plane.

United Relax Row has individually adjustable leg rests that fold up at a 90-degree angle to create more room to sleep or stretch out for solo travellers, couples and families.

Ideal for families with small children, it will include specially sized blankets, two extra pillows and a Sesame Street x Children’s Travel Kit and stuffed plush toy for kids.

Elevated interiors, featuring new United Polaris Studio suites with lie-flat, all-aisle-access seats and extra premium seating, will roll out on United’s new Boeing B787-9, with the inaugural international flight from San Francisco to Singapore on 22 April 2026.

It will be joined by 47 Boeing B787-9 Dreamliners by April 2028, along with 40 Airbus A321neo ‘Coastliners’ (of 50 total), 28 Airbus A321XLR (of 50 total), 119 Boeing 737 MAX and 18 Airbus A321neos on order.

For international long-haul flights, United will use the new B787-9 Dreamliners and fly the Airbus A321XLR with Polaris seats on existing routes to small cities in Europe and South America by mid-year.

The Coastliner A321neo will be deployed on United’s busiest transcontinental routes between Los Angeles and San Francisco and New York/Newark, while new 41-seat CRJ450 aircraft, operated by SkyWest, will connect smaller US cities to United’s Chicago and Denver hubs.

The all-new Coastliner interior features 20 new, all-aisle-access lie-flat seats in United Polaris, 12 United Premium Plus seats – a first for narrowbody domestic flights – and 129 United Economy seats, offering a widebody experience on a narrowbody jet.

Since announcing its ‘United Next’ growth strategy in 2021, the US carrier has added 22 Boeing Dreamliners, 237 Boeing 737 MAX and 67 Airbus A321neos and retrofitted 70 per cent of its narrow-body fleet.

The addition of the A321neo Coastliner and A321XLR, combined with airline’s existing fleet, means United will soon offer nearly double the number of lie-flat seats than its next closest competitor.

United Executive Vice President & CCO Andrew Nocella said: “These new planes and products not only complement our fleet and network plans, but they also give our customers more premium amenity and seat choices.”
