Virgin Atlantic repositions itself as a transatlantic airline, ditching four major cities in one fell swoop.

 

In a momentous decision, Virgin Atlantic, have announced they are pulling out of their services to Tokyo, Mumbai, Vancouver and Capetown.

Instead, the airline giants have decided to focus on the UK and USA.

Their transatlantic timetable will be given a boost, with a fifth flight added to their Heathrow to LAX service.

A few extra flight paths will increase in service, More precisely, London to Detroit and Manchester to Atlanta.

According to Virgin Atlantic CEO, Craig Kreeger, the decision came at a time when the airline had a desire to focus on their strengths.

“Today’s announcement allows us to play to our strengths and focus our network on routes …that are most important to our customers,”

The CEO went on to further reiterate that the company believed Transatlantic flying has always been at the heart of their network.

“And our most financially successful region,” the CEO said.

The shut down will be progressional.

The Vancouver service will continue throughout their winter months but will not be renewed the following year.

Honk Kong and Mumbai are set to shutter on the 1st of February, while Cape Town will cease after the 27th of April, 2015.

A few services were spared the axe. Daily flights to Johannesburg and Delhi as well as a few other destinations in Asia, Africa, the Carribbean and the Middle East, will be maintained.
