Virgin Australia’s first-ever direct service from Melbourne to Uluṟu touched down in the Red Centre on 6 June 2024 and will be followed by the debut of direct Brisbane-Uluṟu flights on 7 June.
Launched in partnership with the NT Government and Voyages Indigenous Tourism, the new services will add 62,000 seats to Uluṟu each year, supporting the Indigenous tourism sector, which contributes almost $6 billion to the national visitor economy.
First Nations entertainer Mitch Tambo and DJ SVVLO performed at a departure gate party for the 182 passengers on the sold-out inaugural VA flight followed by a VIP event at Ayers Rock Resort’s Wintjiri Wiṟu featuring singer Budjerah.
Virgin Australia CEO Jayne Hrdlicka said the launch of Uluṟu services marked a very special milestone.
“We are proud to be connecting Australians to Uluṟu as part of our ongoing mission to provide more value and choice to travellers. We know the return of Virgin Australia Uluṟu services will be welcome news,” she said.
Voyages Indigenous Tourism Australia CEO Matt Cameron-Smith said: “To see Virgin Australia planes touching down in Uluṟu again is a huge thrill – this is a landmark moment that underscores the boundless appeal of the Red Centre.”
“We’re excited to have even more visitors experience the wonders of Uluṟu, along with culturally immersive experiences like Sunrise Journeys and Wintjiri Wiṟu, through Virgin Australia’s extensive network.”
Using Boeing 737 aircraft, VA will operate up to four services between Melbourne and Uluṟu per week and thrice-weekly flights on the Brisbane-Uluṟu route.
The VA Uluṟu flights kick off with a three-day sale until 8 June 2024.
