When it comes to packing some travellers are having a hard time keeping it light, according to new figures.
The US Department of Transportation revealed that for the first three quarter of 2014, travellers spent nearly US$2.6 billion in baggage fees on around 27 US airlines.
During the third quarter alone, travellers were charged nearly US$960 million for excess packing. This was a rise from $881 million during the third quarter last year.
According the US transport group, Hawaiian Airlines was a big earner in baggage revenue, reporting $20.9 million for the third quarter alone. An increase from $19.1 million year-on-year.
For the year so far, Hawaiian has collected some $57.2 million, Star Advertiser reported.
Independent Hawaiian carrier and Hawaiian Holdings subsidiary, Island Air raised $1.1 million for the third quarter, up $874,000 on the same period 2013.
Meanwhile, Australian carrier, Jetstar’s ancillary revenues – which include checked baggage, seat selection, onboard food and entertainment – increased to an average of $31.60 per passenger last year. This was up from $30.60 in 2012 and even higher than the $24.10 in 2011.
