Aloha Down Under 2023, hosted by Hawai‘i Tourism Oceania, recently wrapped up its annual roadshow, spreading the spirit of ohana – family, love, and support – across Christchurch, Auckland, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney.
The theme for this year’s Aloha Down Under was ohana. Ohana is the Hawaiian word for family, but according to Hawai‘i Tourism Oceania (HTO), it means so much more than that.
“If you’re accepted into someone’s ohana, it means to be treated with support, compassion, loyalty and love. It’s a great honour to be a part of ohana. And it means that you’ll never be forgotten or left behind,” a HTO representative said.
The theme resonated deeply with the industry following the recent devastation caused by the wildfires that struck West Maui. And while there was, of course, the fun (hula lessons anyone?) and the fab food you would expect with any event associated with Hawai‘i, this year was a little different.

Agents lined up to show their support by sending messages and financial support to the communities impacted by the wildfires. Because that’s what family does.
Tourism’s vital role and HTO’s focus
The Hawaiian Islands rely heavily on tourism, which plays a significant role in supporting local businesses and communities. Agents were reminded that from 8 October all previous restrictions on travel to West Maui north of Lahaina will be lifted.

HTO is encouraging visitors to connect deeply with Hawaiian culture, via culinary and cultural experiences. There is also a focus on ‘Made in Hawai‘i’, HTO urging visitors to shop local during their stay.
