ATIA launches ‘The Travel Gap’ to turn gap years into travel careers

In positive news for the travel sector, the Australian Travel Industry Association (ATIA) has launched a new, nationwide gap year program aimed at connecting school leavers with a career in travel.

In positive news for the travel sector, the Australian Travel Industry Association (ATIA) has launched a new, nationwide gap year program aimed at connecting school leavers with a career in travel.

Created in partnership with youth employment platform My First Job, The Travel Gap scheme is the first major rollout under ATIA’s A30 Workforce program announced at last year’s Beyond Borders Summit.

The Travel Gap promises more than just a break between school and further study – it offers young Aussies a chance to “learn, earn and explore” by working with real employers in the travel industry, from tour operators to travel agencies and beyond.

While more than 60 per cent of school leavers want a gap year, according to ATIA, many struggle with where to begin, and concerned parents often want a more structured plan. This program ticks all the boxes.

Backed by My First Job’s recruitment tools, The Travel Gap matches Gen Z job seekers with opportunities based on age, interests and availability, making the leap into travel more accessible than ever.

While some My First Job candidates have already dipped their toes into the industry (by volunteering at the 2025 National Travel Industry Awards), ATIA CEO Dean Long said more young Australians needed “to see travel as more than a holiday”.

“The Travel Gap will open their eyes to these possibilities while giving them the structure and support they need to make it happen,” he remarked.

“This partnership is a critical step in addressing the workforce shortages our sector faces and a key milestone in ATIA’s Project A30 strategy. It’s about reshaping perceptions, opening doors, and building confidence in a generation who may not yet realise the opportunities travel has to offer.

“We’ll soon be reaching out to ATIA members who are interested in becoming host employers or partners in this program. This is your chance to help shape how the next generation sees our industry and support a new wave of talent as they take their first step.”

My First Job CEO and Founder Cass Champion said that partnering with ATIA on the initiative “makes perfect sense”.

“My First Job is a purpose-built platform that empowers young Australians to step confidently into the workforce, connecting them with entry-level opportunities and providing the tools they need to succeed,” she stated.

“Together, we’re opening doors for young people to explore the travel industry, gain life skills, and chart their own course through meaningful, purpose-driven work.”
