Aussies aren’t just travelling in record numbers to Japan – they’re also spending more on each trip than ever before. And not just a little more.
According to new Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) data, the average expenditure per Australian visiting Japan in 2023 was a massive 37.4 per cent higher than it was in 2019, which was already a high-spending year.
The JNTO data puts the increase in spending down simply to longer stays, with visits over 14 days up by 7.6 per cent and shorter stays under one week down by 4.4 per cent.

Travellers who combine business and leisure, or ‘bleisure’ travellers, significantly influenced this trend, JNTO says.
In 2023, the percentage of Australian bleisure travellers staying over a week rose from 35.2 per cent in 2019 to 45 per cent.
Earlier this year, JNTO reported that Australia was well on track for a record year of travel to Japan, with visitor numbers for the first quarter of this year up nearly 50 per cent on the same period in 2019.

While it’s well known Australians are flocking to the Asian nation, an increasing number are choosing an alternative to traditional accommodation while they’re there. Read more about this here.
