Novotel & Mercure Darwin Airport Resort jointly opened Australia’s first-ever “airport resort” in the capital of the Northern Territory today.
The tropical-inspired resort has undergone a $30 million upgrade across its existing rooms with the addition of newly built villas, an Olympic-sized swimming pool and an Indigenous training academy.
The resort’s expansion has increased its room capacity with a total of 423 rooms now listed across the property.
Guests can choose from family suites to freestanding bungalows and newly built tropical villas each featuring a private plunge pool.

As part of the redevelopment, the Mercure Airport Hotel and Novotel Airport Hotel were merged into a single, larger resort owned by the Airport Development Group (ADG), which acquired the two hotels in 2021.
Guests looking to explore the Top End can enjoy a complete resort experience including swimming in one of Australia’s largest city hotel swimming pools.

According to Darwin Airport Resort General Manager Chris Chaffe, guests arriving at the resort will be immersed in the unique lifestyle and culture of the Northern Territory.
“Integrating and recognising Larrakia Indigenous culture and heritage has been an integral component of the project,” Chaffe said.
“The new resort is enriched with Aboriginal art and themes, inside and out, providing an appropriate reminder that this pioneering world-class resort is on the lands of the world’s longest-surviving culture.”
The resort resides on the lands of the Larrakia Nation, the traditional custodians of the greater Darwin area. Chaffe said Indigenous engagement has been an integral part of the hotel’s redesign.
Capturing the connection to Larrakia country, each villa is named after a leading First Nations Territorian, with their story outlined for guests to learn more.
The villas offer a plush king-sized bed, large LCD TV, Nespresso coffee machine, and spa-like bathroom with a rejuvenating rainforest shower.

“The resort is the perfect base for a Top End getaway. It’s an easy 15-minute drive to the city centre and just over an hour’s drive to Litchfield National Park, one of the Top End’s most popular attractions,” Chaffe remarked.
“It is also very convenient for flights to Territory destinations such as the Tiwi Islands, Katherine, Kakadu and West Arnhem.”
Earlier this year, Karryon stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn and reviewed the 4-star property located along the Darwin Esplanade.
