GNARLY! Thredbo Website Crashes As Aussies Rush To Book Snow Trips

One of NSW's most popular alpine resort websites, thredbo.com.au went off-piste and crashed yesterday after thousands of keen snow bunnies raced to secure lift passes for what will be a shortened winter season due to COVID-19 restrictions.

One of NSW’s most popular alpine resort websites, thredbo.com.au went off-piste and crashed yesterday after thousands of keen snow bunnies raced to secure lift passes for what will be a shortened winter season due to COVID-19 restrictions.

After bookings went live yesterday on Thredbo’s website, the site promptly plunged downhill faster than an Olympian going for gold with thousands looking to book passes at the same time causing the site to crash.

In a Facebook post on the resorts Instagram page, Thredbo said its website had been overwhelmed in these “unusual times”.

While it’s nice to be popular, many were annoyed and upset at the thought of missing out on the Thredbo 2020 season which begins on Monday 22 June.

In Thredbo’s post on Instagram and Facebook, the statement read: “At one point we had as many as 25,000 visiting our Online Store to purchase lift passes, the largest volume we’ve ever experienced on our store.”

“We have been overwhelmed by demand for the first release of the 2020 lift passes,” the post read.

Demand for domestic skiing and snowboarding this winter in Australia has spiked due to international borders remaining closed and looking likely to remain so into the new year 2021.

And while hopes of a Trans-Tasman travel bubble could see some lucky Aussies catching the end of the ski season in New Zealand if the agreement does get the green light, there are still no guarantees, nor certainty around an actual date to work towards.

This year’s Australian ski season across all resorts in New South Wales and Victoria faces extra restrictions with the number of people allowed on the mountains limited due to coronavirus and social distancing and extra hygiene measures in place.

NSW’s other major ski resort, Perisher, will begin selling passes on Monday for a 24 June opening.
