Booster of happiness: Tourism Fiji offers NZ Health Minister free trip

New Zealand's Director-General of Health and cult hero Dr Ashley Bloomfield and his family have been invited to Fiji to relax in paradise once he finishes his duties this month.

New Zealand’s Director-General of Health and cult hero Dr Ashley Bloomfield and his family have been invited to Fiji to relax in paradise once he finishes his duties this month.

New Zealand people’s favourite Dr Bloomfield will step down from his role as Director-General of Health for New Zealand on July 29th.

But forget the lame bottle of wine or the giant signed card as a farewell gift, on hearing the news, Tourism Fiji wasted no time in getting to work to instead offer a no doubt fatigued Dr Ashley with a booster of happiness in the form of a free trip to Fiji for himself and his family.

And just in case the actual offer of a free holiday wasn’t enticing enough, Tourism Fiji created a cheeky video to showcase many of the relaxing options on offer for Dr Bloomfield if he did accept the unique leaving gift.

From 6-year-old Ratu Isikeli Sauturaga sharing that Fiji’s traffic-light system is a lot more relaxed while he sips on a traffic light mocktail to local Mohammed Zoheeb, informing Dr Bloomfield that the only injection he’ll need is a shot of vitamin D, the short video is clever and the ray of sunshine that will no doubt win the hearts of Dr Bloomfield and his family and people the world over.

Clearly, they won’t need to worry about social distancing either, given they’ll have 33 islands to choose from to get away from it all.

“You don’t need to stay at home anymore; come visit us!” the video signs off.

Speaking about the viral #GiveAshleyABreak campaign, Tourism Fiji CEO Brent Hill said, “Our New Zealand team came up with the idea due to Dr Ashley’s impending retirement from the role.

“It was a fun way to thank him and to poke a little playful fun at some of the memories of that time during the lockdown and his big contribution.

“We love having Kiwis here in Fiji (#2 source market), and what better way to get a send-off than come and relax here in Fiji!”

Word on the streets in Nadi is that Dr Bloomfield has accepted the invitation and is “really excited to visit”.
