The announcement was made this morning when the company revealed its four brands – Intrepid Travel, Peregrine Adventures, Urban Adventures and Adventure Tours Australia – had made $397 million in revenue in 2018, up 17 percent on the prior year. Earnings before interest and tax also climbed to around $15 million, thanks to a 25 percent increase in underlying profitability.

Chief Executive, James Thornton, attributed the third consecutive year of growth to strong consumer desire for sustainable travel along with the company’s commitment to having a ‘Purpose Beyond Profit’.

“We’re as committed to sustainable travel as we were in the beginning, so the truly inspiring thing for everyone here at Intrepid is just to see that the more we grow, the more we can do,” Thornton said.

“Customers really are looking for businesses to be a force for good.”

As a cherry on top of the financial growth, Urban Adventures saw its customer numbers jump by 60 percent in 2018, while Employee Engagement reached a score of 82 percent (which is likely to increase after they receive their bonuses).

The Intrepid Foundation, the Intrepid Group’s not-for-profit, also marked a record year, raising $1 million for local and international charities.

What a year!

Looking ahead in 2019, which just happens to be the Group’s 30th anniversary, Thornton told KARRYON in a Q&A that there’s plenty planned from more ‘Mystery Getaways’, new destinations for Urban Adventures and a carbon management plan. Click here to read the full interview.

2019 will also be the year the Intrepid Group travels to seven continents, as Peregrine Adventures launches a range of charters in Antarctica with Chimu Adventures.

Further information on Intrepid Group’s 2018 results will be released in April in Intrepid Group’s Annual Integrated Report.
