While the world celebrates the festive period, the families and friends of 12 cruisers will mourn the loss of their loves ones who were tragically killed during a recent shore excursion.

The 12 cruisers had disembarked Royal Caribbean Cruises’ Celebrity Equinox and Serenade of the Seas earlier this week, for a bus trip to the Mayan ruins in Mexico’s east.

Along the way from Mahahual to Tulum, the bus flipped, leaving 12 dead and another nine injured.

An investigation team is looking into the cause of the accident, as is the bus company, Costa Maya Mahahual.

In a statement, Royal Caribbean expressed its sympathies, describing the bus accident as “heartbreaking”.

“Our hearts go out to all those involved. We are doing all we can to care for our guests, including assisting with medical care and transportation.”

The cruise line continued, saying it was working with local authorities to “learn more about the accident” and that it’s doing all it can to assist guests.
