3 major changes coming to Cunard's Queen Mary 2

One of the most recognisable cruise ships in the world (by name and image), Queen Mary 2, will be going under the knife for a modern makeover.

The Cunard ship, which is praised for having retained traditional elements of cruising such as formal nights, will undergo ‘significant refurbishment’, which will see her fitted with new designs and guest experiences.

Her 25-day dry dock will commence at the Blohm+Voss Shipyard in Hamburg, Germany on 27 May next year and will see her out of commission until 21 June.

According to Cunard Director Angus Struthers, changes onboard comes from extensive research and will see the iconic ship’s reputation grow ‘even stronger’.

Although full details of the refurbishment will be revealed over time, the cruise line has unveiled three major changes future guests can expect to see onboard.

They are:

1. Singles staterooms

Queen Mary 2 will receive singles staterooms like Queen Elizabeth.

Queen Elizabeth became the first Cunard ship to receive singles cabins in December last year.

Now, Queen Mary 2 will follow in her footsteps by receiving 15 single cabins during her makeover.

According to the cruise line, while research shows more guests are seeking multi-generational groups, there’s often one member of the family travelling as an individual.

The new single rooms will support these people and accommodate others travelling alone.

2. More Britannia Club balcony rooms

The cruise ship will receive 30 new Britannia Club balcony staterooms to meet growing demand for balcony rooms.

Additionally, guests travelling in these staterooms will be able to dine at a time of their own choosing in the dedicated Britannia Club restaurant, which will be expanded.

3. More for the pups

The cruise ship will be able to cater for more four-legged travellers, with the addition of 10 new kennels.

According to the line’s research, pets are increasingly seen as integral to the family group.

Queen Mary 2 is already the only cruise liner in the world to offer dedicated kennels and currently carries up to 12 dogs and cats on its transatlantic crossings.

These kennel places frequently sell out so the new kennels will meet strong demand.

We can’t wait to see what other changes are coming onboard.
