Avalon Waterways’ Australian Ambassador Melissa Doyle recently embarked on her second river cruise – the Romantic Rhine – after her first-ever solo journey on the Danube in 2022. Now a self-described river cruise convert, she has some takeaways for those curious about this mode of travel.
The well-known TV presenter, journo, author and radio host has shared her Avalon Waterways river cruising experience in a series of new videos, a blog and via social media content.
A few (five) of her favourite things
Her favourite things about sailing with Avalon include the cabins designed for the ultimate view and the flexibility and choice of onboard and onshore activities, particularly the local excursions and discovering the hidden riverside gems not accessible by road.
“In October last year, my husband, John, and I hiked through the vineyards in Rudesheim and learnt how to make proper Rudesheim coffee. We biked along the Heidelberg foreshore, explored the mountaintop 13th-century castle and replenished with schnitzel and apple strudel,” Doyle said.
She also had a lasting impression of her first-ever river cruise.
“My first river cruise with Avalon was my first overseas holiday alone. For a busy working mum of two that was heaven! I also took comfort in knowing that as a solo traveller, our cruise director was keeping an eye out for his passengers,” Doyle added.
