Evergreen cruise ship damaged in fire

Evergreen is working to rearrange holidaymakers booked to travel on its forthcoming vessel, Emerald Belle, after it was significantly damaged in a fire.

The fifth Star Ship was under construction in the Den Breejen Shipyard in the Netherlands when flames were spotted on the ship at around 12.30am Sunday morning (UTC+1:00).

According to an Evergreen statement, firefighters were quick to the scene, however, damage to the vessel was too significant – preventing the line from launching the ship as scheduled in April this year.

“We are grateful and relieved that nobody was on board at the time and most importantly, there were no injuries to any shipyard worker or firefighters to our knowledge.”

Evergreen said that at this time there is no confirmed cause for the fire and ensured a full investigation is underway by the shipyard and firefighting authorities.

Reservations teams are currently reviewing all bookings to see how best to accommodate guests, whether it be on similar departures aboard Emerald Belle’s sister ships or Evergreen’s sister company, Scenic.

Agents with client bookings will be notified by the teams to discuss options over the next 48 hours. Agents can also click here to visit a special site for ongoing updates on the affected sailings.

Emerald Belle was to be the line’s fifth ship, following the successful launch of Emerald Dawn and Emerald Sun last year.

Each Star Ship carries 182 passengers in 72 suites and 20 staterooms.
