In an ‘iconic’ tie-up, two global giants will come together for the debut of RCI’s newest ship Icon of the Seas in January 2024 with Argentine football legend Lionel Messi named as the mega cruise vessel’s official ‘Icon’.

Lionel Messi, aka TIME’s 2023 Athlete of the Year and the current Inter Miami CF Captain, is the most decorated football player in history and will join the ship’s exclusive naming ceremony in Miami in January 2024.

With cruises departing from 27 January 2024, Icon of the Seas is a first-of-its-kind holiday at sea and the ship’s reveal in October 2022 spurred the single largest booking day and highest volume booking week in the cruise line’s history.

Of his new role, Messi said: “I’m thrilled and honoured to join the Royal Caribbean family to celebrate the arrival of the game-changing Icon of the Seas.”

Icon is beyond anything else that’s out there for family holidays with incredible never-before-seen features, all designed for making memories together.”

Messi’s appointment also follows the recent announcement of RCI as Inter Miami CF’s Main Partner and Official Holiday Partner.

RCI President & CEO Michael Bayley said: “Icon of the Seas is the culmination of more than 50 years of delivering memorable holidays and it’s set to live up to its name in more ways than one when it changes the travel industry in January 2024.”
