More Aussie travellers are choosing to go on cruising holidays, changing the face of the typical cruise passenger, with recent stats revealing there’s no longer a single “type” of cruiser.
It’s no longer just retirees choosing cruise holidays, but even those in their 20s and 30s, at least according to the latest statistics from travel insurance company InsureandGo.
Value for money, the chance to see a number of destinations, and only having to unpack once are attracting more travellers to this increasingly popular mode of seeing the world, and blowing all cruise passenger stereotypes out of the water.
InsureandGo has witnessed policies being taken out by a range of age groups from 18 – 99 year olds. The data shows that one in five passengers are a retiree, aged 70 and over, and that one in five passengers are a millennial aged 18 to 34.
This year alone, the ages of cruisers taking up InsureandGo’s Cruise policy was spread across the board with 8.80 per cent of policies taken out by 18-29 year olds, 10.26 per cent by 30-39 year olds, 15.40 per cent by 40-49 year olds, 20.89 per cent by 50-59 year olds, 23.22 per cent by 60-69 year olds, 17.24 per cent by 70-79 year olds and 4.06 per cent by people aged 80 and older.
“Cruising is definitely on the rise and not just amongst middle-aged Australians but also for people in their twenties and thirties. The cruise industry is evolving quickly and offering more unique experiences, which has made them a more attractive holiday to people of all ages.”

In response to the growing popularity of cruise holidays, InsureandGo was the first travel insurance company in Australia to develop a specialised policy to provide cover for almost any cruise. The companies’ Cruise Travel Insurance includes cover for a number of scenarios that could come up whilst travelling on a cruise such as missing a cruise departure, port cancellation due to weather, or medical assistance required on-board.
“Many people think that cruises are all-inclusive, forgetting that travel insurance needs to be purchased separately to their trip. Our Cruise policy is one of our most popular policies and with cover starting from just $30, it’s an easy way to help travellers safeguard themselves against the unexpected to ensure they have the best possible cruise vacation.”

It’s been an exciting couple of weeks for Australian cruising, with the industry’s growth showing no sign of abating anytime soon.
