Celebrity Cruises has revealed wave-making sisters Below Deck’s Captain Sandy Yawn and Jacksonville School for Autism Founder Michelle Durham are the Co-Godmothers for the brand-new Celebrity Ascent, debuting in November 2023.
The sisters’ appointment as Co-Godmothers complements the industry’s first brother-captain duo – Dimitrios and Tasos Kafetzis – who will take the helm of the new vessel, making it a family affair on Celebrity Ascent.
They also join an accomplished lineup of Celebrity Cruises Godmothers, including Simone Biles and Malala Yousafzai.
Celebrity Cruises President Laura Hodges Bethge said the inspiring duo have dedicated their lives to making a positive impact.
“We are honoured to have Captain Sandy and her sister Michelle join the legacy of Celebrity’s Godmothers,” she said.
“Captain Sandy’s life story is one of resilience, leadership and strength, as a maritime industry pioneer and a role model. Her sister, Michelle, is a tireless advocate for children with autism.
“Both live by Celebrity’s values and we have no doubt they are the perfect choices for Ascent.”

“It fills my heart with immense pride to stand as co-godmother of the Celebrity Ascent alongside my sister,” Ms Dunham added.
Captain Yawn said: “This role serves as a reminder that women can steer their destinies with grace and determination, commanding the seas of possibility and inspiring others to follow their own paths with courage and conviction.”
Celebrity Ascent’s naming ceremony is on 1 December 2023 before her maiden voyage from Fort Lauderdale on 3 December.
