With the jobs of many travel industry people in a holding pattern, it’s not surprising that some career pivots are happening. Who hasn’t thought, for example, “Maybe I should be run a drive-in cinema”, right?

If you’re based on the New South Wales north coast and at a loose end this weekend, why not nip up to Bangalow for the pop-up drive-in being run by regular KarryOn contributor, Ben Alcock.

With client work reduced sufficiently to cause him a few jitters, Ben turned his attention and an uncharacteristic throw-caution-to-the-wind attitude to something completely different: A pop-up, COVID-safe drive-in cinema in his tiny home town of Bangalow, a short drive from Byron Bay.

“A mate and I had organised a couple of similar events a few years back and considered resurrecting it earlier this year. Then, when we got a sense that restrictions were easing, that people were itching for a COVID-safe night out, so we locked in some dates. Those dates are rapidly approaching,”

Ben Alcock, Flicks in the Field organiser

“We call it Flicks in the Field—even though we’re setting up in the local Showground—and we’ll see how it goes in these COVID times,” said Ben.

If it’s a success, we suspect you’ll soon see more Flicks in the Field events happening in and around the Byron Shire.

So, what’s on this weekend?

Friday 10 July

It’s family flicks night with Labyrinth starring David Bowie and the incredible Jim Henson puppets, plus some local shorts including the chaotic adventures of Bunny Racket.

Saturday 11 July

Kick-off your Sunday shoes with a steamy, all-dancing classic double feature of Footloose and Saturday Night Fever.

That’s probably more heat than anyone should be asked to handle on a chilly mid-winter’s night.

Tickets are available at www.flicksinthefield.com.au.
