Aussies ditch the slots & shops for Vegas experiences

The strong US dollar isn't deterring Aussies from visiting places like Las Vegas but rather changing the reasons behind their holidays.

The strong US dollar isn’t deterring Aussies from visiting places like Las Vegas but rather changing the reasons behind their holidays.

According to Natalie Schofield, Australian spokesperson for Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, Aussie numbers to the city are strong despite the exchange rate, but the one thing that has really changed are the activities they’re undertaking.

Where once they would hit the branded stores to ‘invest’ in a designer dress or some fancy shoes, they’re now using their time and money to explore the destination’s unique and healthier side.

“Shopping use to be huge for Australians in Vegas but now it’s more about those unique experiences.”

Container Park

Really picking up in recent months is Downtown Vegas, which Schofield says has a number of fun and unique activities.

Among them is the Downtown Container Park, an open-air boutique shopping, dining and live entertainment area where kids play in an interactive playground while adults relax at free concerts, movies and more.

While Caesars and Bellagio house the newer and more modern casinos, Schofield said Australians are taking time out to visit the retro slots in places like SlotZilla. Aside from trialling the older pokies, the 12-storey building is home to Vegas’ indoor Zipline, taking visitors halfway across the casino at 77-feet in the air.

JLO

Australians in Vegas are also making use of the destination’s affordable ticket prices to see big name celebrities such as Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez and more.

“It can cost a lot of money to see your favourite celebrity in Australia but it’s so cheap when you’re in the US and Vegas is home to so many big names right now.”

Cirque Du Soliel is another hot ticket, with around eight shows available to see in Vegas alone.

Outside shows and entertainment, Schofield said there’s a rising number of Aussies booking wellness trips to the city.

Wellness trips in Vegas? Yes, wellness trips in Vegas.

The Vegas representative explained that there’s a rising health scene in the City of Lights with new organic dining spots and yoga options.

Downtown Glutton

Among the must-try dining venues is Glutton Downtown, a mix of modern and American cuisine using locally sourced produce and home-made pastas. The venue specialises in burgers and was even voted to have the best burger in Las Vegas.

More Australians are also taking part in Aria’s unique Indoor Hike, which takes holidaymakers past the hotel’s art installations, restaurants, theaters, stores and bars.

For the yogis there’s Mirage Spa & Salon which holds yoga sessions in front of its underwater dolphin aquarium. Participants will be able to watch and connect with dolphins going about their daily life as they stretch out for the cobra or warrior pose.
