The Mudgee Region has tied with Orange in NSW for the title of ‘Best Kept Secret’ in this year’s Australian Traveller Readers’ Choice Awards.
The two destinations beat Broome and Exmouth in Western Australia and Ballarat in Victoria.
According to the Australian Traveller, the two regions are often overlooked for ‘more obvious gems’ despite offering unique experiences.
“Make the drive from Sydney over the Blue Mountains – a delight in itself – and you’ll come across a land of fertile, rolling hills, of rustic-luxe cafes dotted amongst vineyards, and of heritage villages.”

Mudgee Region Tourism incorporated chief executive Cara George said more Australians are starting to appreciate what the Mudgee region has to offer, including its nature, wine tasting, beer tasting, arts, national parks and history.
Described as the ‘ultimate weekend escape’, the Mudgee region is located 3.5 hours from Sydney and four hours from Newcastle.
It has welcomed 45,000 visitors over the last two years, an increase of nine percent on the previous period.
“The Mudgee Region provides a sensory feast of food, wine, culture and more, and it only continues to grow, however the region continues to maintain its country charm and friendly welcoming nature.”
