Should this be Australia's next tourism ad?

With Australia Day just around the corner tourism leaders are searching for new and exciting ways to promote our large island country to the world.

With Australia Day just around the corner tourism leaders are searching for new and exciting ways to promote our large island country to the world.

Tourism bureaus like Tourism Australia do a great job at promoting the country. They spend millions of dollars putting together incredible videos, but in today’s technological age sometimes it’s the simpler things that catch on and push travellers to really fall in love with a destination.

This new Youtube video [see below] is proving just that.

The two minute and thirty seconds home-made clip manages to capture all of Australia’s tourism offerings in a fun, catchy and youthful way.

And believe it or not, it’s working.

‘Straya’ where mateship lasts forever!

In less than three days, the video has received over 540,000 views from both a local and international audience.

The video is so successful that it is already a third of the way to reaching the 1.6 million views Tourism Australia’s ‘There’s Nothing Life Australia’ video received in two years.

There are also a number of viewers that have suggested it be used to officially promote the destination.

“omg [sic] this would be a GREAT tourism music video for the rest of the word. great job im [sic] sharing this on facebook to the first person who commented on this, this video this has to go viral :)”

For anyone who hasn’t seen it yet, the creator ‘coachbombaymusic’ exposes viewers to some of Australia’s greatest assets, including its breathtaking sites [the Opera House and outback]; historic culture; love of sports [cricket, football, netball, surfing]; incredible beaches and shorelines; and its world famous celebrities [Kylie Minogue, The Wiggles].

Backed to Outkast’s catchy 2003 Grammy-award winning song, ‘Hey Ya’, he also replaced the original lyrics with his own quirky words.

For example ‘what’s cooler than being cool [ice cold]?’ is now ‘what’s cooler than a big cold beer?’

Now what's cooler than a big cold beer? Ice cold

Now what’s cooler than a big cold beer? Ice cold!

He also sends a shout out to our gorgeous shoreline by replacing “my baby don’t mess around, because she loves me so, and this I know for sure” with ‘my country don’t share the waters, because of all the waters that’s around our sand’.

Creator Paul Pichugin says he made it as a tribute to the country he’s proud ‘to call home… STRAYA!’.

“For all my non-Australian friends the idea behind “STRAYA” is the same idea behind “MURICA”.. just better, because it’s Australian ;-)”

Will you be singing ‘Straya’ on Australia Day?
