When the owners of God’s Little People cat sanctuary on the Greek Island of Syros posted an ad looking for a paid caretaker, the response was far beyond what they ever could have imagined.

Denmark expats Joan and Richard Bowell thought they might get 50 applications if they were lucky, so you can imagine their disbelief when in just six weeks nearly 40,000 people had applied to run their cat sanctuary.

“We only anticipated between 20-50 interested applicants. When I said please share far and wide I had NO IDEA what was coming my way,” Joan wrote on Gods Little People’s Facebook page.

Each day throughout August she was receiving up to 1600 emails.

Although the position is in paradise and involves many cats, Joan wanted to make sure applicants knew what they were in for.

She kept updating the Facebook post, emphasising that the job was indeed real, and clarifying that the tiny house provided to the manager would not accommodate families or pets from home.

She also mentioned that the job came with some less desirable aspects like cleaning vomit and making “heartbreaking” decisions about sick and injured cats.

The pair said they have been blown away by the “beautiful and encouraging words and sentiments” of people across the world

“Thank you for making cats matter in this world. They have profoundly changed my life… I hope they have the same effect on yours,” Joan said.
