Where

Rio de Janeiro is the host of the 15th Paralympics and it is the first South American city to ever host the Games, Event. Rio is Brazil’s second biggest city by population size, with over 6.3 million people within the city.

A record 176 countries and more than 4,000 athletes will compete at many different venues in Rio, split in four main locations.

There are 23 Paralympic sports in total: Archery, Athletics Boccia (ball sport), Canoe, Sprint, Cycling, Road Cycling, Track, Equestrian, Football, 5-a-side Football, 7-a-side Goalball, Judo, Powerlifting, Rowing, Sailing, Shooting, Sitting Volleyball, Swimming, Table Tennis, Triathlon, Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Fencing, Wheelchair Rugby and Wheelchair Tennis

 

Schedule

The Paralympics officially start with the opening ceremony on Wednesday, Sept. 7th, at Maracanã Stadium. The Games continue through Sunday, Sept. 18.

In the United States, there will be at least 66 hours of coverage from Rio.

 

Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony will take place at Maracanã Stadium and will begin at 5:30PM (Brazil Time, 4:30PM EST).

The Paralympic torch relay will begin on Thursday (September 1st). On its way to the opening ceremony in Rio de Janeiro on September 7th, the relay will visit five cities: Brasília, Belém, Joinville, Natal and São Paulo.

The surge in ticket sales for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games that begun after the Olympic Games has maintained momentum, passing the one million mark as of Monday, August 29th.
