The annual Fiji Tourism Exchange for 2024 has begun with a vibrant opening ceremony at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa in Denarau. Karryon’s MATT LEEDHAM reports from Fiji.

After celebrating a record calendar year of visitation in 2023, totalling just under a million global visitors, this year’s two-day Fijian Tourism Exchange (FTE) features a packed agenda brimming with workshops, insights, and invaluable networking opportunities to amp up tourism to the South Pacific nation for an even brighter future.

With over 550 FTE delegates registered (up 10 per cent versus 2023), including tourism operators, international buyers, and media representatives, the event brings together industry stakeholders from around the world to explore Fiji’s distinctive product offerings and cultivate long-lasting commercial relationships.

Addressing attendees at the opening ceremony, Fiji’s Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Hon. Viliame Gavoka, emphasised tourism’s significant role in the nation’s economy and extended his appreciation to all participants for attending.

“Tourism remains a cornerstone of Fiji’s economy, and the Fiji Tourism Exchange serves as a prime platform to showcase our rich culture, traditions, and amazing natural wonders to the world.

“It’s heart-warming to witness such an overwhelming turnout, with even greater enthusiasm than last year, boasting participation from over 125 buyers, 80 sellers, and representatives from 19 international media outlets; we have over 4,000 meetings scheduled. We’re building upon the success of last year, and the momentum is palpable,” remarked the Hon. Minister.

The Minister also shared updates on property developments in Fiji, including the expansion of existing resorts and the launch of innovative hospitality ventures, highlighting growth and innovation for Fijian tourism.

The highly anticipated reopening of The Crowne Plaza Fiji Nadi Bay Resort & Spa (Formerly the Pullman Nadi Bay Resort & Spa Fiji) is one example of recent resort expansion, with the first phase of its transformation now completed.

In his address, Andre Viljoen, Tourism Fiji Chair and Managing Director of Fiji Airways emphasised Fiji’s opportunity to extend its unique Fijian hospitality to guests from all corners of the world.

“It’s an exciting time for Tourism Fiji as we forge forward optimistically, resilient in our strategic vision to continue to build a sustainable and growing tourism industry. Through close collaboration with our stakeholders and partners, we place significant emphasis on optimising the value of visitor expenditure, enhancing yield and introducing new experiences into the market,” highlighted Viljoen.

Echoing Mr Viljoen’s sentiments, Tourism Fiji CEO Brent Hill expressed his optimism regarding the opportunities FTE will engender for the country’s tourism sector.

“We’re delighted to host the Fiji Tourism Exchange 2024 in partnership with our platinum sponsors, Fiji Airways. We recognise the potential of our event to facilitate meaningful engagement.

“As we move forward, it’s evident that our tourism landscape is evolving. Our tourism industry is strong, performing incredibly well, positioned for further growth, and our country is well prepared to take on the challenge.

Indeed, tourism to the country continues to boom – especially from Australia, Fiji’s number one market.

Citing Fiji Bureau of Statistics data, Tourism Fiji reported in January that 434,533 Australians travelled to the island nation last year, easily surpassing the previous record of 367,020 achieved in 2019—equal to a 16.9 per cent rise.

“We eagerly anticipate the exchange of ideas and the forging of lasting partnerships during this event,” shared Hill.

The Fiji Tourism Exchange (FTE) 2024 takes place over the next two days at the Sheraton Fiji Golf and Beach Resort in Denarau.
