School holiday visitors and local in Port Stephens gathered on the beach today to form a giant human whale on Shoal Bay Beach.
The ‘record breaking’ human marine animal was formed to celebrate what Port Stephens tourism leaders say is shaping up to be a ‘record whale watching season this winter.
The free human whale event drew a record 1,000-plus crowd, which formed the outline of a humpback by a helicopter hovering overhead.
Around 800 people formed a 100m-long human whale on the sand at Shoal Bay last winter in what is now an annual celebration of Port Stephens’ increasingly popular whale watch season, with more than 18,000 humpbacks tipped to trace the local coast between now and November.
The whale was created on the western end of Shoal Bay Beach in Port Stephens at noon.
