New York City is on track to reach 56.4 million visitors in 2022, representing 85 per cent of the city’s record 2019 levels and a 71.4 per cent increase on 2021 visitation. Based on its booming tourism rebound, NYC is forecast to attract 61.7 million travellers in 2023.

NYC & Company, the destination marketing organisation for the five boroughs of New York City, expects to reach almost 57 million visitors in its end-of-year report.

The majority of visitors to NYC in 2022 were US travellers (47.4 million). Around 8.9 million international tourists travelled to Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, Manhattan and Staten Island – triple the amount of overseas visitors in 2021.

Also, the ongoing tourism recovery saw more than USD$40 billion in direct visitor spending.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said: “New York City is not coming back – we are back.”

“After being the hardest hit of any city in the country during the pandemic, nearly 57 million travellers visited the greatest city in the world in 2022.

“We can’t wait to welcome even more visitors in 2023, but I have one message for them all: Spend money!”

Several factors contributed to NYC’s tourism rebound. Throughout 2022, the city saw visitation return to pre-pandemic patterns and hotel demand remained strong.

Airline route resumption and new services plus extra tourism offerings, programs and major events were critical to attracting visitors back to NYC and encouraging spending.

New York remains the largest point of entry to the US and a top destination for international travellers. International visitation, which accounts for nearly half of visitor spending, rebounded in 2022 with arrivals tripling over 2021.

NYC Hotel Week is currently on until 12 February 2023 with savings of 23 per cent on 140-plus properties across all five boroughs.
