Tuesday brought great news for the industry, with the announcements of Queensland extending its border area with Northern NSW and South Australia opening up to NSW residents from Thursday 24 September at 12.01 am – just in time for school holidays.
AFTA has welcomed the South Australian border opening and the relaxation of the QLD border restrictions, while domestic airlines are getting gearing up for an Aussie tourism boom, as travellers prepare to explore their own backyard.
“Clearly the sooner the borders are completely open, the better. South Australia’s decision is very welcome and Queensland’s expansion of the border bubble to allow an additional five local government areas to enter the state is a step in the right direction, especially given New South Wales has just 16 active cases which are predominantly returned international travellers and zero locally acquired cases.”

Time to celebrate
In celebration, Qantas, Jetstar, and Virgin Australia have all added more flights to their schedules; with Jetstar announcing a 36-hour flash sale.
From Thursday, Qantas will be bringing back its daily Sydney-Adelaide service and from 1 October, Jetstar will increase its Sydney-Adelaide service from five times a week to twice daily.
Virgin Australia has resumed flights between Canberra-Adelaide and will operate daily flights between Adelaide-Sydney, Brisbane-Canberra, and Canberra-Gold Coast.
Virgin’s Canberra-Adelaide service will recommence on 12 October, offering three return services per week, and return flights from Adelaide-Sydney will increase from three times a week to daily from 2 October.
Extra capacity with Virgin Australia is also expected over the course of October between Brisbane-Canberra and Canberra-Gold Coast.
