SCUBER: World's first ride-share submarine service launches in Queensland

‘Your scUber is here.’ Uber is going deep underwater with a new initiative that’ll see Australia be the first in the world to offer a ride-share submarine experience.

Instead of calling for an Uber travellers will be able to call for a scUber that’ll give them a one-of-a-kind view of one of the world’s greatest natural wonders, The Great Barrier Reef.

From 27 May, the scUber (aka submarine) will pick a limited number of riders from Heron Island. The service will then move through the World Heritage Site to see Port Douglas, Cairns and the GBR region from 9 June.

Although Uber promises a cheap ride, scUber is somewhat different (probably ’cause there’s little competition) with an experience costing AU$3,000 for two rides.

The fare comes with a range of perks, including pick up and drop off from your location with the Uber app, a scenic helicopter flight to either Heron Island or Quicksilver Cruises pontoon, and of course, a one-hour scUber submarine ride.

All that for AU$3,000 for two people – that’s actually quite reasonable.

Tourism and Events Queensland’s Chief Executive, Leanne Coddington, said the bureau is thrilled to have teamed up with Uber and offer travellers an innovative experience through the reef.

“In late 2018, consumer research identified that exploring the Great Barrier Reef in a submarine was the most desired future travel experience sought by visitors,” she said.

“scUber makes this wish a reality and reaffirms Queensland tourism’s commitment to providing locals and visitors alike with truly remarkable ways to explore nature’s wonderland.”
