Popular Peru destination Machu Picchu is now officially closed until further notice, leaving around 800 tourists stranded at the foot of the mountain with little supplies.

Protests and demonstrations have been taking place across Peru following the change of government on 7 December 2022, including in the tourist hubs of Cusco, Puno and Arequipa.

The demonstrations have resulted in the temporary closure of some airports, including Arequipa, Cusco and Puno. Several roadblocks are also disrupting traffic and limiting transport options.

Adventure World has issued a statement to let advisors and their clients know that the tour operator’s teams in Peru are reviewing each individual case for customers currently travelling or about to arrive in Peru.

The Australian Government has advised travellers to reconsider travel to Arequipa, Cusco and Puno due to ongoing civil unrest.

Adventure World also encourages travel advisors and clients to reschedule travel plans to the region.

For travellers already in Peru, Adventure World and its on-ground operations team are fully committed to providing the necessary modifications to their itinerary with safety as a top priority.

Peruvian tourist authority i-Peru has launched an online registration form for affected tourists.
