We all know how much travellers love Japan, but did you know it is the fastest-growing destination for Australians? It’s well ahead of Singapore, China and USA, and shows no sign of slowing.

According to the Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO), Japan saw a 24.4% increase in Australian travellers in September year on year, as well as YTD growth of 11.9%.

This growth has been assisted by an increase in flights to and from Japan and favourable exchange rate conditions, not to mention the culture and diversity of experiences on offer to travellers.

Why Japan?

Is it quirky…? YES
Is it iconic…? YES
Is it family-friendly…? YES
Is there world-class transport…? YES

Not only is Japan renowned for its natural landscape – the small island offers great beaches, skiing and the beautiful Cherry Blossoms – the food is also gaining popularity the world around. Australians like to eat a broad range of international cuisines, and no surprises here, over the last four years the fastest growing cuisine in Australia was Japanese.

Japan is also playing host to influential global events, such as the Rugby World Cup on now and the Olympics in 2020.

Klook, a world-leading travel activities and services booking platform, is also seeing this trend reflected in their online booking platform, with two of their top five booking destinations being Osaka and Tokyo, and recording a 150% YoY increase in Japan bookings from Australia and New Zealand.

“Japan is consistently ranked as one of our top destinations. Travellers love what this country offers in terms of cultural experiences and adventure.”
