Sydneysiders, got a spare room? Airbnb wants you to host Vivid visitors & offset those 'cozzie livs'

Vivid Sydney is one of the Southern Hemisphere’s biggest annual festivals with more than two million attendees expected in 2023. If you’re keen to share your home, Airbnb wants you.

Vivid Sydney will present its biggest program to date in 2023 with the annual event representing a major drawcard for the city and a vital boost to the local economy.

Airbnb is encouraging Sydney locals to host forecasted bumper crowds from regional areas and interstate for Vivid Sydney, running from 26 May to 17 June 2023.

Last year, Airbnb hosts collectively earned more than AUD$17 million hosting visitors during Vivid with individual hosts netting a median of $2,200 during the three-week event.

In 2022, Vivid Sydney had a record-breaking opening weekend with 440,000-plus visitors and the full program attracted more than 2.5 million attendees (over 7% increase from 2019 pre-pandemic attendance).

With an estimated 1.4 million-plus spare bedrooms sitting empty in Sydney, home sharing is an opportunity to generate some much-needed income to offset the current cost of living (aka ‘cozzie livs’) and help tourists looking for affordable accommodation and real local experiences.

“In the current economic environment, people want to travel affordably. And after years of being isolated during the pandemic, they’re looking for ways to connect with people and have authentic experiences, meaning now is the perfect time to stay in an Airbnb Room,” Airbnb Country Manager for Australia and New Zealand Susan Wheeldon said.

“Nights stayed in private room listings in Australia grew by almost half in 2022 compared to the year before and private room hosts in Australia earned a total of over $92 million while the typical private room host earned more than $4,100.

“Hosting on Airbnb is a great way to help showcase Sydney’s incredible world-class events and the diverse and exciting experiences the city has to offer,” she said.
