Peel off Big Banana, swim away Big Barramundi & take a crunch elsewhere Big Apple, Australia has a ‘big’ new attraction called The Melon & it’s a juicy addition.

The Big Melon (watermelon, to be specific) opened this week in Chinchilla, Queensland after a two-month campaign by Wotif to grace a small Australian town with the country’s next oversized roadside attraction.

Described as the next ‘juiciest big thing’ in Australia, The Big Melon won against great ideas such as the Big Tulip in Mittagong and The Big Kilt in Glen Innes.

Tourists are already salivating over the idea of getting their pictures alongside the new giant attraction, which joins other largely popular fruit icons in Queensland such as The Big Pineapple, The Big Mango, The Big Peach and of course, The Big Apple.

Paul McVeigh, Mayor of Western Downs Regional Council (which Chinchilla is a part of), said he’s “thrilled” over the arrival of the new attraction and hopes it will boost the regional town’s tourism numbers.

“With the town now officially on the Aussie ‘Big Things’ tourist map, we hope The Big Melon provides travellers with fruitful experiences for years to come, and we encourage all Aussies to consider a road trip to the region.”

FUN FACT: Chinchilla receives some 15,000 travellers when it hosts MelonFest every two years.
