A Qantas A380 fly-over Sydney Harbour, Tourism Australia launches new TV ad, and a spectacular fireworks show courtesy of P&O Cruises – this was how our industry celebrated “Straya” day.
Was it a kite? A hot air-balloon? Or was it even superman? No, it was a Qantas A380 flying over the beautiful Sydney Harbour yesterday as a part of the Australia Day celebrations. Qantas’ flagship aircraft entered the skies via North Head and descended to just 1,500 feet for the fly over.
The super jumbo then performed a series of turns over the iconic Harbour Bridge before finally waving its goodbyes.
It was a spectacle to be seen, with planes not normally allowed to fly so low over the city.
Here’s a video of the event in case you missed it:
Across the Pacific, New Yorkers got to sit in awe – and freezing cold temperatures, thanks blizzard – as the new Tourism Australia ad campaign was launched in the Big Apple. Featuring the hunky Chris Hemsworth as the new global ambassador of Tourism Australia, the launch was attended by Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs the Hon. Julie Bishop.
The new campaign focuses on Australia’s rich underwater and coastal experiences, and guests of the event were able to get a sneak peek of the offerings down under with immersive ‘virtual reality’ displays.
Inbound tourism from the US is growing exponentially, especially in the Sunshine Coast – thanks Bindi!, and the new TVC is hoped to boost the numbers even more.
Meanwhile, back in Australia, P&O Cruises treated 6500 passengers who were onboard four of its ships – Pacific Aria, Pacific Eden, Pacific Pearl and Pacific Jewel – to a spectacular evening fireworks show in Sydney Harbour.
That was before capturing the biggest selfie EVER at sea!

The crew and passengers on Pacific Eden having some fun with the camera on Australia Day.
Channel 7’s Sunrise show even broadcasted their morning show onboard the Pacific Eden to give viewers a front row seat on the Harbour as Australia Day got underway.

And that’s a wrap! The Sunrise team and Pacific Eden passengers celebrate Australia Day.
