Thought Sydney was fun? A new study says it actually kind of sucks

Is the iconic Harbour not beautiful enough? Are the waterfront bars not sociable enough? Is Luna Park not loud enough? Is Vivid not creative enough? And are the Botanical Gardens not picturesque enough?

Is the iconic Harbour not beautiful enough? Are the waterfront bars not sociable enough? Is Luna Park not loud enough? Is Vivid not creative enough? And are the Botanical Gardens not picturesque enough?

Apparently not, according to a new study which found Sydney to be one of the least dynamic and least funnest cities around the world.

:0 offended!

Sydney giphy-1

Research conducted by Time Out City Index on 20,000 people across 18 cities worldwide found that Sydney is lacking compared to other major destinations worldwide when it comes to food, drink, inspirations, dynamism, community, affordability and sociability (could those lockout laws be to blame?).

The Harbour City was ranked 16 on the list of ‘funnest cities’, well behind its Aussie neighbour and biggest competitor Melbourne, which landed second place after Chicago.

According to research, while Sydney may not meet people’s expectations in the fun department, it was recognised for having diverse neighbourhoods, while Melbourne was praised for being an easy place to live, having great for quality of life and acting as an inspiration.

Travellers seem to love Melbourne more than they love Sydney.

Meanwhile the ‘world’s chief fun city’, Chicago scored highest for its restaurants, bars, neighbourhoods and affordability and was even celebrated for being one of the few cities across the globe where strangers feel comfortable enough to chat, go on dates and have a great work-life balance.

Lisbon, New York  and Madrid rounded off the list of top five funnest cities, followed by Mexico City, Sao Paolo, Los Angeles, Barcelona and London.

According to Time Out Australia’s Editorial Director Alyx Gorman, “cities are important”, fun and act as an opportunity for people to discover new ideas and new ways of living.
