Overnight, the Chinese government issued its first ever ‘red alert’ for pollution – the highest possible caution when it comes to air.

The alert is predicted to be in place for the next three days as severe smog hovers over the highly populated city.

In a bid to protect residents, the Chinese capital will practically shut down from now until mid-Thursday when the weather is expected to push a bit of smog away.

For tourists, the ‘red’ alert means a number of attractions may also be closed over the next day and a half and some flights may be affected by the density of the air.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has urged all Aussies in the city to remain indoors where possible and to monitor local website on pollution levels.

“There may be a range of disruptions to flights, local transport and public services.”
