WAIT, WHAT?! NYC is getting a whole new neighbourhood & it has a movable building

On the off chance that your NYC itinerary wasn't already long enough, the iconic destination's leaders have announced the city is getting an entirely new neighbourhood.

On the off chance that your NYC itinerary wasn’t already long enough, the iconic destination’s leaders have announced the city is getting an entirely new neighbourhood.

Yeah, a whole new neighbourhood in NYC!

Coming in 2019 and joining the likes of Williamsburg, Little Italy, Chinatown, Chelsea, Harlem, Tribeca, the Upper East Side, Greenwich Village and Midtown Manhattan (could keep going) is… Hudson Yards.

Hudson Yards will be located on the far west side along the Hudson River.

Located on the far west side along the Hudson River and built directly over the rail yards is the 1.6 million square metre project featuring commercial, residential and cultural property along with five acres of gardens and public plazas.

Speaking to media in Sydney last week, NYC & Company’s Senior VP of Global Communications, Chris Heywood, said a highlight of the neighbourhood and what’s likely to draw millions of visitors per year is a permanent public art centre called ‘The Vessel’, which features 154-interconnecting flights of stairs with more than 2,500 individual steps.

Described as the Eiffel Tower of NYC is ‘The Vessel’.

It’s a trippy yet beautiful piece of architecture that New York City describes as “its version of the Eiffel Tower”.

The Vessel will have 2,500 individual steps.

Visitors can climb ‘The Vessel’ from March 2019 before checking out the neighbourhood’s 100 shops, Equinox Hotel (the debut property for Equinox Fitness) and satisfying their taste buds at 16 distinct dining experiencing curated by celebrity chefs such as Thomas Keller, David Chang and Jose Andres.

“Hudson Yards is quite extraordinary and it’s reshaping the city’s skyline.”

Another standout feature within Hudson Yards will be the outdoor observation deck located 100 floors high, making it the highest outdoor observation deck in the western hemisphere.

Hudson Yards will be home to the highest outdoor observation deck in the western hemisphere.

Meanwhile, right next door to The Vessel will be New York’s (and quite possibly the world’s) first movable building called ‘The Shed’.

Taking up 18,500 square metres, The Shed is described as the “world’s first commission centre for all forms of art” where tourists and locals can celebrate and take part in performing arts, visual arts and pop culture. It will accommodate a variety of work and can host large-scale concerts on the roof.

The Shed will retract & expand as NYC’s first movable building.

Oh, did I mention the building moves? It has an expandable outer shell that contracts and expands using a set of wheels and the power of one hybrid car.

“The Shed is like nothing you’ve ever seen.”
