As a first time entrant in the Canberra and Region Tourism Awards, Yass Valley Council walked away a winner collecting the gong for the “Local Government Award for Tourism”.
Yass Valley Council takes a leadership role to support the development, management and marketing of tourism for Yass Valley with a fully-dedicated tourism section, with four key accountabilities; destination management, destination marketing, visitor services and tourism facilities management.
Working closely with industry, surrounding local government areas, Inland NSW Tourism and Visit Canberra to market and promote the regions tourism products and experiences and assist the industry in maximising the value of tourism in Yass Valley and ultimately the broader Canberra region.
Yass Valley Council Tourism Manager Sean Haylan accepted the award on behalf of Council and the tourism team based at the Information Centre in Yass.
The category is open to all local government authorities and recognises excellence in tourism planning, the provision of tourism facilities and services, marketing, event development and management, and the overall contribution made both locally and overall to the tourism industry.
“We have a close working relationship with the team at Visit Canberra and have recently partnered with them in tourism marketing and promotions in a bid to showcase the broader Canberra region to the consumer. Yass Valley plays a significant role particularly in the food and wine sector with the majority of the regions wineries located with the local government area.”

Yass Valley Council will now represent the region in this category at the Australian Tourism Awards in Adelaide in April 2015.
