FCM reports Singapore is the secret sauce in Australia’s business travel revival

The Lion City is tipped as the key ingredient in Australia’s international corporate travel comeback with routes between Sydney, Melbourne and Perth and Singapore predicted to beat pre-COVID levels by the end of July 2022.

The Lion City is tipped as the key ingredient in Australia’s international corporate travel comeback with routes between Sydney, Melbourne and Perth and Singapore predicted to beat pre-COVID levels by the end of July 2022.

A FCM Consulting report found seats between Singapore and Sydney were up 26 per cent, Perth was up 17 per cent and Melbourne up nine per cent from January to June 2022 compared to the same period in 2019.

For the rest of 2022, the forecast seat growth is also considerably high with Sydney up 53 per cent, Perth predicted to reach 47 per cent and Melbourne up 38 per cent.

Since international borders reopened, people have been flocking to and from Singapore for business and leisure.

Singapore Airlines also upped its Melbourne – Singapore service to four flights per day from 1 June due to consumer demand.

FCM Consulting General Manager Felicity Burke told FCM’s inaugural Th!nk event that corporate travel was taking off once again across all key domestic and international routes.

“The link between Australia and Singapore has always been incredibly important but it’s more vital than ever in terms of trade, holidays and a gateway to the world as a major hub airport,” Ms Burke said.

“Five routes are forecast to continue to exceed pre-COVID levels in and out of Australia until the end of 2022.

“Three of these routes are between Singapore and some of our largest state capitals (Sydney, Melbourne and Perth), with the two domestically being Sydney (up six per cent) and Melbourne (up 22 per cent) to the Gold Coast.

“These routes will likely change as the world opens up more with key routes, such as Hong Kong and China, offering alternative routes into Europe and other parts of the world, but the growth we’ve seen domestically and internationally is a precursor to what we can expect in the future.”
