Former ATIA chair Mike Thompson awarded OAM in 2025 King’s Birthday Honours List

Former Australian Federation of Travel Agents - AFTA (now Australian Travel Industry Association - ATIA) Chair Mike Thompson has received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the King’s Birthday Honours List for his outstanding service to tourism and travel.

Former Australian Federation of Travel Agents – AFTA (now Australian Travel Industry Association – ATIA) Chair Mike Thompson has received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the King’s Birthday Honours List for his outstanding service to tourism and travel.

Thompson chaired AFTA from 2009 to 2018 and played a pivotal role in expanding the organisation’s national influence during a crucial era for the industry. 

A life member of the association since 2019, Thompson also held senior positions at Travelscene American Express, Helloworld Travel and American Express, and contributed to consumer protections as a trustee of the Travel Compensation Fund (TCF). 

“I’m honoured to be recognised in the King’s Honours List. This was entirely unexpected and I’m grateful,” Thompson said.

“Travel and the arts are passions that have shaped my life. To be acknowledged is appreciated.”

Outside travel, Thompson has supported many major cultural institutions including the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Sydney Dance Company and Bell Shakespeare.

“Mike Thompson’s impact on our industry cannot be overstated. He was a fearless advocate for the independent agency owners ensuring their issues were always centrally considered by the board,” ATIA CEO Dean Long said.
