From mixologists to make up artists: Melbourne Airport plans new-look duty free space

Shopping at Melbourne Airport is about to look very different. Forget the sterile fluorescence of typical duty free offerings, Melbourne Airport’s retail space is getting a very Melbourne vibe.

Shopping at Melbourne Airport is about to look very different. Forget the sterile fluorescence of typical duty free offerings, Melbourne Airport’s retail space is getting a very Melbourne vibe.

Introducing Lotte Duty Free as its new operator, Melbourne Airport has plans to expand its duty-free offerings. And that’s while also incorporating the vibrant essence of Melbourne’s laneways and architectural style.

The first phase of enhancements will focus on revamping the Arrivals Duty Free area. And to do this, the airport drew inspiration from the iconic laneways of Melbourne.

Departures will also witness its own expansion in 2026. This will provide more room for an extensive range of products and engaging in-store experiences.

Jai McDermott, Melbourne Airport’s Chief of Retail said international travellers can also expect new luxury brands and travel exclusives as they head overseas or return home.

“Melbourne is widely regarded as Australia’s fashion capital,” he said.

“And the Lotte brand will enhance that reputation with luxury items and travel exclusives that can only be found in duty free.”

“Key in-store features include a mixologist providing holidaymakers with free cocktails, makeup artists offering complimentary tutorials, and skincare consultations, as well as pop-up activations.

To help make your client’s shopping experience even more convenient, Melbourne Airport has relaunched its online duty-free store, aptly named “Laneway.”

This platform allows your clients to browse and purchase products up to two months prior to their travel date.

They can then conveniently collect their selected items from Lotte’s Arrivals or Departures store on the day of their journey.

For further information, you can check out the airport’s online duty free store, www.melbourneairport.com.au/laneway.

Melbourne Airport has also just started work on a major upgrade to its baggage handling process. This will see a “state-of-the-art” bag tracking initiative replace the current system of conveyor belts within the international terminal. Read more about it here.
