FRONT ROW SEATS: Hurtigruten's New Solar Eclipse Itinerary To Antarctica

Imagine watching a total solar eclipse in Antarctica from the deck of a Hurtigruten expedition ship. It would be an extraordinary, otherworldly experience. In 2021 this dream can become a reality for travellers.

Yes, Hurtigruten has just lifted the lid on some big nows. They will be offering a unique Solar Eclipse itinerary to Antarctica in 2021.

The 2021 eclipse on 4 December will only be visible from Antarctica and it will be 75 years before a similar opportunity presents itself.

“We will sail both the world’s first hybrid expedition ship, the MS Roald Amundsen, and her sister ship, the MS Fram, to prime positions outside the South Orkney Islands aiming to see this spectacular natural phenomenon, if weather permits.”

Hurtigruten CEO Daniel Skjeldam

Hurtigruten will bring along hand-picked experts to give lectures and insights about the solar eclipse.

“We aim for all Hurtigruten sailings to be lifechanging and transformational. These experts will further deepen and expand this unequalled possibility to experience one of nature’s most striking events.”

The solar eclipse experts will supplement Hurtigruten’s onboard Expedition Teams of scientific experts in areas such as marine biology, sustainability, history, glaciology, oceanography and photography.

Hurtigruten’s experts offer a program of lectures and insights and explanations relevant to each expedition.

The central point of all these activities is the Science Centre, where guests can also participate in citizen science projects.

“This is a truly unique opportunity for a very limited number of modern-day adventure travellers to both immerse in the seventh continent and its icebergs, penguins, seals, whales and birds, and at the same time have front-row access to an astonishing planetary display,” Daniel Skjeldam said.
